NEW YORK -- Two championships and eight successful seasons in Boston brought Terry Francona exactly zero first-place votes in Manager of the Year balloting. It took him one year with the surprising Cleveland Indians to bag the prize. Francona and Clint Hurdle of the Pittsburgh Pirates won the Manager of the Year awards Tuesday after guiding their small-budget teams to charming turnarounds. In a close vote by the Baseball Writers Association of America panel, Francona edged old friend John Farrell of the World Series champion Red Sox 112 points to 96 for the American League honour. "I have a feeling he wouldnt trade what they did for this any day of the week," Francona said on a conference call from Tucson, Ariz. Hurdle was a runaway winner in the NL, selected first on 25 of 30 ballots after taking the Pirates to the playoffs in their first winning season since 1992. "It is so rewarding for me to see whats happened, the synergy in the city," Hurdle said in Pittsburgh. "To be a small part of a group thats able to bring joy at so many different levels -- thats whats rewarding to me in life." It was the first Manager of the Year award for Francona even though -- in an interesting twist -- he steered the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. During his initial season with the Indians, he directed them to a 24-win improvement and a late surge that produced their first playoff berth in six years. Cleveland lost the AL wild-card game to Tampa Bay, but voting is conducted before the post-season. Francona said he called Farrell, a longtime colleague and his former pitching coach in Boston, on Tuesday morning because he thought it was funny they were up against each other as finalists. If they heard such news years ago, Francona said, "both of us would have laughed each other out of the room." Hurdle also was quick with a self-deprecating joke after he won. "Theres guys laughing all over the place," he said in an interview on MLB Network. "The players know so many times this season wed have a big series, getting together just trying to break the ice Id tell them, Hey, look guys, youve got to step it up, play big this week because Im going to get outmanaged. I can tell you one thing thats going to happen: Ill get outmanaged. So really step it up. And they did. They believed me every series." Just like Francona, the 56-year-old Hurdle won Manager of the Year for the first time. His highest finish had been third in 2007, when he led Colorado to the World Series. Don Mattingly of the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers came in second and Fredi Gonzalez of the NL East champion Atlanta Braves was third. "Im grateful," Hurdle said. "But its kind of weird." The only other Pittsburgh manager to win was Jim Leyland in 1990 and 1992, the bookends to three consecutive division titles for the Pirates. After that, they endured a record 20 straight losing seasons -- the longest drought in any of the four major professional sports -- before going 94-68 this year to capture an NL wild card. Riding a wave of excitement from a rejuvenated fan base in a city finally enthralled by baseball again, Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati in the wild-card game before losing to league champion St. Louis in a division series that went the full five games. "I know were scratching the surface of something thats dynamic," said Hurdle, who has managed the Pirates for three seasons. Hurdle was chosen second on the other five ballots and was the only manager picked on every one. He had 140 points in the 5-3-1 scoring system to 68 for Mattingly, who received two first-place votes. Gonzalez got three firsts and 43 points. Mike Matheny of the Cardinals was the only other skipper to appear on an NL ballot. He was tabbed second by four voters and third by seven. The 54-year-old Francona garnered 16 first-place votes to 12 for Farrell, who lifted the Red Sox from last place to first in the AL East in his debut season as their manager. Boston won 97 games, tied for most in the majors, one year after going 69-93 under Bobby Valentine. Bob Melvin, last years winner, received the other two first-place votes and came in third after his low-payroll Oakland Athletics won their second consecutive AL West crown. Francona never received a first-place vote during eight seasons as manager of the Red Sox. He had never finished higher than fourth for this award in 12 years as a big league skipper, including his stint with Philadelphia. After a messy split from the Red Sox following their 2011 collapse, Francona spent a year in broadcasting that he said helped him become more patient and less stubborn. This season with the Indians was among his most fun in baseball, he said, and he loves the people he works for because when challenges arise "we tackle them together." "Boston is, youre not really supposed to ever lose a game, and thats difficult to do," Francona said, adding the job there is "to manage all the noise thats around the team so the guys can play." "You cant have all that passion and not have some of the headaches that come with it," he explained. "Its a little different in Cleveland because its more just baseball, which I enjoy." Chad Kackert scored a pair of touchdowns as the Toronto Argonauts won their fourth in a row on the road with a wild 34-22 come-from-behind victory over the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday. The Argos scored 33 unanswered points in the second half, the fourth consecutive game they have come back to win when trailing at the mid-mark. Edmonton, which had led 22-1 early in the third, allowed the Argos to get back into the game, seeing their lead erode to 22-20. Toronto then surged ahead with three minutes remaining in the fourth after Pat Watkins absolutely crushed Eskimos backup quarterback Kerry Joseph for a sack, causing him to cough up the ball and the Argos recovered on the Edmonton five. That led to an unusual touchdown as Argos quarterback Zach Collaros fumbled the ball into the end zone where Kackert was able to jump on it to put Toronto up 27-22. The Eskimos had one more shot but Joseph threw it right into the hands of Marcus Ball, who ran it 57 yards for the touchdown with 40 seconds left to put the game away. "It just shows that our guys will never quit," said Argos coach Scott Milanovich. "They have a lot of belief in each other. Im a bit disappointed in myself that I wasnt able to get our offence going in the first half, but our defence really played an outstanding game. It was a total team effort. "Fortunately for us, and unfortunately for them, once the momentum starts swinging one way it is difficult to get it to stop and I felt thats what happened tonight." Watkins, who had a monster night on defence with a huge sack and fumble recovery and two interceptions, said his team has shown some real resilience of late. "It just goes to show the kind of character we have on this team," he said. "Nobody here believes a game is over until there are zeros on the clock. Thats the way our coach has been teaching us, to keep playing no matter what. This shows our ability to react when we are down and that we can keep composed and keep playing." The Argos (9-4) solidified their hold on first place in the East Division while also becoming the first team in CFL history to win all four games of a four-game road trip. Only three other teams (Calgary in 1967, B.C. in 2001 and Winnipeg in 2012) have ever had a four-game stint away from their home field, and none was able to sweep on the trip. The Eskimos (3-10) saw a two-game winning streak come to an end, jeopardizing their hopes of earning a cross-over playoff spot. "It was our execution, but Toronto did a good job of taking advantage of our mistakes," said Eskimos coach Kavis Reed. "Thats an exceptional team and were not at the point where we can make the mistakes that we made. And they were good enough to capitalize on them." The bad news was compounded as quarterback Mike Reilly left the game with a suspected concussion at the end of the first quarter and did not return. Edmonton gained a punt single from its first possession after a drive-killing dropped pass by running back John White when he was in the clear. The Eskimos got the ball back, but Reilly was promptly picked off by Wattkins at the Edmonton 52.dddddddddddd. The shift in field position would only gain the Argos a single on a missed 43-yard Swayze Waters field goal attempt two series later, however. Edmonton continued to catch breaks leading up to a touchdown with 18 seconds left in the first quarter. A face-mask penalty negated an interception by Jermaine Gabriel and then two more penalties put Edmonton in the red zone where Reilly was able to find Shawawd Chambers for a 17-yard TD pass and an 8-1 lead after the opening quarter. Toronto returner Trent Guy took the ensuing kick 65 yards to the Edmonton 27, however Waters missed another field goal attempt from 28 yards, hitting the ribbon at the top of the uprights and failing to get a point from it. Reilly left the game with a head injury, but Joseph looked competent in his place, leading the team on a long drive that culminated in a six-yard pass into the end zone to Fred Stamps and a 15-1 Edmonton lead midway through the second. Edmonton kicker Hugh ONeill missed a late field goal attempt of his own from 45 yards, keeping the Eskimos 14-point lead intact at the half. The Eskimos built on their lead six minutes into the third frame as a 35-yard pass to Stamps set up a three-yard keeper by Joseph to make it 22-1. After his two earlier misses, Waters finally hit a three-pointer from 50 yards out for a 22-4 score with five minutes left in the third. The Argos got themselves back in the game in a hurry late in the third quarter as Watkins had his fourth interception in the last two games and a long return, setting up a 48-yard touchdown run by Kackert to make it 22-11 heading into the fourth. "He changed the game with that big run after the turnover," Reed said. "His big run gave them momentum back and we werent able to grab it back." Toronto cut Edmontons lead to just three points four minutes into the fourth quarter as Collaros hit Dontrelle Inman for an 11-yard TD and then found John Chiles open in the end zone for a two-point convert to narrow the gap to 22-19. The Argos had a chance to tie the game on a field goal attempt from 25 yards out with four minutes remaining, but Swayzes kick went wide to the left for a single. The Argonauts return home for the first time in five games next Friday as they face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Eskimos remain home to play Montreal on Saturday. Notes: The last time the two teams met was in mid-August, when the Argos emerged with a 36-33 win over Edmonton in a game that saw Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly throw for more than 500 yardsa Edmonton receiver Fred Stamps played in his 100th CFL game and also hit the 1,000 yards mark for receiving yards for the fifth consecutive seasona With Ricky Ray remaining out with an injury, Toronto backup QB Zach Collaros was able to pass his starter for passing yards on the seasona The Argos came into the game 8-0 when they scored at least 30 points and 0-4 when they did nota John White came in as Eskimos running back for the game with starter Hugh Charles out with a hamstring injurya Toronto entered the contest with a 7-1 record this year in games decided by four points or less.
